Help with the discussion between patients and caregivers!

The questions included in the form above are meant to elicit commentary on how health care providers feel about the role patients may play in improving the quality and efficiency of the health care they receive. Inspired by the words of Mahatma Gandhi, this blog and its associated resources were created to challenge patients to “be the change you want to see in the world (or healthcare)”.

This quote also identifies what is perhaps one of the greatest frustrations of being a provider—the idea that meaningful change often requires a sincere desire to change. Despite decades of public health interventions seeking to reduce smoking rates and improve diet and exercise, these and other behaviors persist in American society and promote sub-optimal health and healthcare inflation.

The goal of Why HealthCare? is to illustrate how individual behaviors promote waste in the health care system and to facilitate a discussion about barriers to change in American society. Additionally, Why HealthCare? will explore ways in which patients may engage in health care which do not require broad changes in lifestyle, for example; preparing for doctors appointments, improving communication with healthcare providers, keeping track of medical information, effective use of online health resources, and preparing for end of life care.

Decades of behavioral health research have established that educational interventions alone are rarely sufficient to inspire or maintain health behavior change. Why HealthCare? attempts to foster public interest and engagement in health and health care by asking community artists to illustrate a narrative about patient engagement, supported by blogs with physician and patient commentary, and an informational website.

Feel free to answer the questions provided in the form above, and/or go to the Share How YOU Care! blog to contribute stories, art, or content of any kind.
